The Given Rest

© JoAnn Reno Wray

For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.

Hebrews 4: 8-10, NIV

God generously gives us rest, but all too often we fail to take time for that rest. We need it sorely, but dizzying daily demands push from behind; work pulls to the left; family pulls to the right. Who has time to rest? Got to buy groceries and gas the car. Got to pay bills and write thank you notes. Got to volunteer for one more thing at school or church. Got to. . . Got to. . . . Even my cat has more sense!

Cashmere knows how to rest anywhere. My cat, Cashmere, rests anywhere, even on my Christmas village.

We get so caught up in got-tos that we fail to include God, too. From her book, Streams in the Desert, Mrs. Charles E. Cowan shared these words that God’s Spirit whispered to her heart:

My dear child, I did not give you these loads; you have no need of them. Just drop them, and you will find the path easy and you will be as if borne on eagle’s wings.

Every one of those got-to-do things will wait. Or maybe we should learn to delegate? Or say no, a perfectly acceptable answer to all those demands on your precious time. Come apart and spend time with God, and  rest in His Everlasting Arms. Take time to pull the comforting warmth of His word over your entire being. Rest —and in doing so, be obedient and find His peace surrounding you on every side.

PRAYER:

Holy God, my Father and King,

I come to you confessing I have been far too busy. Help me to set priorities correctly. Give me a vision of Your plans for my life and help me implement them in measured and efficient fashion. Whisper in my ear the way to walk. Come to me as I sit waiting and comfort me with Your holy peace. I long to commune with You, to know You better each day. Draw close to me as I draw near to You. Hold me secure in Your Everlasting Arms and give to me all that I need for this life and for godliness.

In Jesus Name,

Amen and so be it.
